CENTENNIAL SOUNDS

Amplifying diverse Appalachian voices

Music and dance have been a vital part of the Folk School since its founding in 1925. As we celebrate our 100th year, Centennial Sounds honors this legacy by spotlighting the cultural richness of Appalachian music and the many voices that shape it. This special performance series will feature five headliners whose work expands and redefines the story of Appalachian music. Through these concerts, we aim to create new opportunities for our community in Western North Carolina to experience the full spectrum of Appalachian sound.

Admission is $25 for adults and $5 for youth. *

Cornbread & Tortillas

Cornbread & Tortillas:

https://cornbreadandtortillas.com/ is known for blending Appalachian string music with Mexican folk influences, creating a unique cross-cultural sound that reflects the shared musical traditions of working people, migration and cultural exchange. Their performances combine fiddle, banjo, guitar and traditional Mexican instruments, offering audiences a lively and meaningful musical experience that highlights how folk traditions continue to evolve and intersect.

Zoe & Cloyd

Opening act for the concert is Zoe & Cloyd: http://www.zoeandcloyd.com—the creative partnership of fiddler/vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and multi-instrumentalist John Cloyd Miller. Hailing from two distinct musical worlds, they merge their unique backgrounds into a powerful collaboration. They will lean into their classically trained klezmer and jazz material. During their set we’ll also hear the influence of 12th-generation North Carolinian and grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler Jim Shumate. Together, they create music that honors their respective traditions while forging a distinctive sound of their own. You can expect soaring harmonies and heartfelt songwriting to welcome Festival Barn friends in the evening’s music.
