About.
Yonder Mountain String Band formed in Nederland, Colorado, in December 1998 and has spent the years since as one of the more durable names in progressive bluegrass. Founding members Adam Aijala (guitar), Ben Kaufmann (bass), and Dave Johnston (banjo) are joined by mandolinist Nick Piccininni and fiddler Coleman Smith. Their 2022 album Get Yourself Outside earned a Grammy nomination.
The band's twelfth studio album, Good As True, came out March 27, 2026, on Thirty Tigers. It was recorded live in the studio and collects eight originals written by the four core songwriters. It closes with "Barroom Feather," a sixteen-minute track the band played without a plan, and the album takes its title from a line in that song. Twenty-seven years in, they are still choosing instinct over formula.
